GSEAC/UAW Strike begins on UW Campus!

Picket Lines up from 5:30am - 5:30pm at main campus entrances

GSEAC/UAW is the union representing teaching assistants, readers,
graders and tutors at UW. GSEAC/UAW has been negotiating with
President McCormick and the UW administration to gain recognition and
being bargaining for a contract. Even though existing legal framework
allows the UW administration to voluntarily recognize and begin
bargaining, they have refused to do so until they can pass legislation
limiting GSEAC/UAW's power first.

Join the picket lines with your own signs in support of GSEAC/UAW, and
attend the rally on Tuesday. More information on GSEAC/UAW is available
at http://students.washington.edu/san/gseac.html

Tuesday, 12/5 __________________________________________________________

Undergrads Rally to Support GSEAC/UAW

Noon
Red Square

Support the striking readers, graders, tutors and teaching
assistants! Tell the administration to recognize the union so we can go
back to class! Bring signs or banners stating your support. Organized by
Undergraduates United in Support of GSEAC/UAW.

For more info, contact SAN at san at u.washington.edu (endorser of the
rally).

Public Meeting on Corrupt Politics w/ Socialist Alternative

6:30 PM
School of Social Work Room B-14, 41st Street and 15th Ave. NE

For only the fourth time ever in US history, the electoral vote may be
different than the popular vote. Now both parties are using various legal
maneuvers and manipulating the will of the people in order to get into
office. Why do we need the electoral college to be a check on the popular
vote? Can the Green Party mount a serious challenge to the two parties of
big business? Or do we need to change our entire political and economic
system? Join Ian Werkheiser to discuss these issues and to strategize
about running independent working class candidates in Seattle in 2001

For more info, contact Michelle at mhajder at hotmail.com or (206) 736-6807

"Closing the Achievement Gap: The Work of the 21st Century" with Dr. Rudy
Crew, Institute for K-12 Leadership

7pm
Kane 110

What is to be done to close the achievement gap that exists between
wealthy and poor, and white and minority students in Washington State and
the nation? In light of the tightest labor market in a generation,
industries from manufacturing to high tech have particular interest in
this subject because of their need for a well-educated work force to
compete in the new global economy. Dr. Crew will address these issues and
take questions from the audience.

Global Health"

7:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Center for Urban Horticulture at UW, 3501 NE 41st Street

Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility presents this dramatic
forum by Dr. Tom Carpenter who traveled to Siberia to examine nuclear
facilities twice this year, working with a Russian / American team,
documenting what appears to be the largest discharge of nucelar
contaminants into the environment anywhere on the planet. Dr. Carpenter,
director of the Government Accountability Project in Seattle, will focus
on global health impacts of release and remediation. Free, but donations
gratefully accepted.
