Hey everyone...
The ASUW has begun looking for candidates to fill my job for next year.
I'd love to re-apply and be your WAC director again next year, but alas, I
am graduating this spring. That means that we're going to need a
brand-new director to continue WAC's great success this year. The
position is open to any UW student, undergrad or graduate, male or female.
If you want to see a formal description of the job, go to
http://depts.washington.edu/asuweb/jobs/descriptions/wac.html. If you
want a more informal account of what being the WAC director is like, you
can talk privately with me or email me with any questions you might have.
Just some basics of the job:
1. The job pays $642/mo. for seven months. Typically, that means you
work from the end of September to about the end of May, taking two or
three weeks off at winter break and two weeks off at spring break. The pay
isn't great, but considering that most jobs similar to this are volunteer
and don't pay at all, it's nice to find one that pays a bit.
2. The time commitment is 20 hours per week-- that's fifteen hours spent
in the office and 5 (more or less) spent doing out-of-office activities,
such as putting on programs, attending meetings, etc. The other great
thing about the timing of the job is that you can schedule your own hours
to fit your schedule! It's really convenient... that way, you can take
whatever classes you need to take when you need to take them.
3. In terms of qualifications you need for the job, the most important
thing is just a willingness to do some work and promote gender awareness.
Some experience putting on programs or leadership within some sort of
group (a student group, for example) is helpful, as are basic computer
skills and a background of involvement with women's issues.
If you're the least bit interested in doing this job, I would encourage
you to apply. I almost didn't apply for this job last year, but I decided
to go for it at the last minute. Now, I'm so glad I did! I've had a
great time working as the WAC director, I've met lots of new people, and
now, I have great experience to put on a resume or to serve as a
stepping-stone to a job in the greater Seattle area. If you want an
application, you can stop by my office (HUB 201), or you can stop by the
ASUW Office (HUB 204L). Also, you can download an application off the
internet-- the website address is:
http://depts.washington.edu/asuweb/jobs/jobs.html. If you have any
questions, feel free to ask!
Thanks,
Marci Comeau
