A plea for help...

Hey everyone...
I almost cried yesterday at the WAC meeting... besides Shannon and I, only
one person showed up (thanks so much, Amy!) I missed you all! In order
to keep doing the awesome programming we've been doing so far, I really
need all of your support and help.
Just a quick update:
I got ahold of Christien Storm from Home Alive and have set tentative
dates for them to come to campus. It looks like we'll be holding two
workshops: a "Boundary Settings/Assertiveness training" workshop and a
Self-defense workshop. The first will be on April 24th at 6 PM, and the
second will be on April 26th, at 6 PM. I'm really excited about this
event! I need to confirm this with Christien, and she's supposed to get
back to me within the next week or so.
We still need to try and plan a March event and a May event. My ideas
are:
For March: The Black Student Commission Director got ahold of me and
recommended we try to jointly bring Farai Chideya, this awesome political
analyst on BET, CNN, MSNBC, etc., in March for Women's History
Month. Shannon is looking into the details of this. I think it would be
a great way to recognize the political contributions women make every day,
and I think it would be particularly appropriate for Women's History
Month.
For May: I would like to try and pull together the Theater of the
Oppressed idea, but I'm still looking into the feasibility of that. My
alternative suggestion is this: a Joint commission committee is planning
to coordinate a lecture series for the Spring quarter, where each
commission brings a different speaker every week to discuss issues
pertinent to that commission. I was thinking we could choose a week in
May and perhaps look into bringing Kirsten Anderberg, the "Body
Acceptance" woman, or some other speaker that deals with body
image. That's an issue that we haven't touched on a whole lot this year,
and I think it's an important one and it would be a great issue to
introduce to a lecture series. Also, I'd like to try, if possible, to
coordinate with A&E to have some influence in, or even co-sponsor, a video
showing during the Spring Film Series.
Hopefully, at the next WAC meeting, we can discuss these ideas
further. Also, we need to discuss a proposal we received from the La Raza
commission regarding co-sponsoring... are you ready for this?... ANGELA
DAVIS! Please come to the next WAC meeting... I'm lonely when you all
don't come see me on Wednesdays!
Thanks,
Marci Comeau
WAC Director
