meeting minutes Sept 16 2004
This was the first meeting during the summer quarter.
Kenneth, Riley and Gregory were in attendance. Brian and Kaui will be back
in the area soon.
I shared my belief that we must have a club that offers more than having a
place to play. We need to develop rituals and processes, have a competition
ladder, have better outreach, and to offer chess instruction. We are all in
agreement. Riley told me that when he attended a meeting where Brian and I
had chess instruction, it was the best meeting of the year. Riley suggested
having at least one meeting with instruction per quarter would really help.
If Brian is up to it.... I believe that we should have chess instruction at
least every other week if possible.
I shared that it is my goal to try to recruit at least 4 freshmen per year
to keep the club strong for the future.
Riley will be able to cover the Dawg-Days event from 10:30 to 12:30. Kenneth
can cover from 12:30 on. I will be there all day. Kaui emailed me before the
meeting and he said that he could help too. Brian emailed me and said he is
moving back on the 26th, so we should have the thing covered.
I suggested that unless we are talking to someone, we should have a game
going on at the Dawg-Days event.
We also talked about having two meetings every Thursday, an informal one in
the afternoon at the hub, and one in the evening at our normal Par 322.
Riley thought that the suggestion was a good idea as he thinks that our
normal place is too far away and is cold and dark.
Riley and Kenneth liked the constitution and agreed that we need to adopt
the new constitution soon. Perhaps we should adopt it by the 2nd week and
have elections soon after.
They both really liked the idea of having a competition ladder. Maybe people
will show up more if there is incentive to improve.
Kenneth is interested in the Secretary position. He also suggested having a
round robin tournament competition. He believes that a round-robin
tournament allows us to play everyone. I mentioned that having a hybrid
approach might work too- that is having a round robin event and having a
ladder system as the ladder system encourages rivalries.
Kenneth and Riley thought that we should have a tournament with another
local club. Riley said that the Rugby team plays another college team, and
both teams use the event for recruiting purposes.
Riley is interested in the Programming Director position as he is already
holding the secretary position for the Rugby club. He suggested having a
University wide chess tournament in the fall.
Next week, we should meet again at the same time, however, the hub closes at
5:00 so we might need to find a different place.
