[Dhsvm-users] Why no Soil Evaporation if Understory is present?

I have noticed that the SoilEvaporation( ) function is only invoked in 
the absence of an understory (look in MassEnergyBalance.c). Does anybody

know the justification for this?

Perhaps it is because we assume the understory covers 100% of the pixel?
