The program is looking for students from all departments who are UW-Seattle undergraduates with strong organizational skills (i.e., not over-committed), and a genuine interest in working with freshmen as they face the challenges and opportunities presented to them as new students. Having been in a FIG as a freshman is not required.
As a FIG Leader, students will develop a deeper connection to the University while also developing transferable skills in public speaking, discussion facilitation, lesson plan development, and principles of instructional leadership. All of these skills will be utilized while instructing a class of 15-25 freshmen enrolled in General Studies 199.
Training will take place during spring quarter 2009. Special arrangements for summer training can be made for students who will be studying abroad during spring quarter. FIG Leaders are eligible to receive up to six credits for their commitments to the program, which includes bother training for and teaching the General Studies 199 course in autumn quarter.

UW AMGEN SCHOLARS SUMMER PROGRAM APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 2, 2009
Interested in learning more about science and biotechnology research as a career? The deadline for the UW Amgen Scholars Program is fast approaching! The UW Amgen Scholars Summer Program provides an opportunity for undergraduates to explore and prepare for careers in science and biotechnology. Reminder: Applications for the University of Washington Retirement Association scholarships are due on February 2, 2009.
The University of Washington Retirement Association will offer up to four scholarships of at least $3,000 for UW students (undergraduate or graduate) studying toward careers that focus on aging-related research or provision of services to older adults.
Awards are based on demonstrated promise and financial need.
Awards are credited to student accounts in Spring 2009.
Applications are available on-line, at
http://depts.washington.edu/retiremt/uwra. Click on 'Scholarships and Fellowships' under What We Offer on the left side of the home page. Scroll down to find the link to the downloadable PDF application form. Print the application form.
Applications, including additional information requested, must be complete to be considered.

Tax 101 workshops for U.S Resident Students:
You've received your 1098T tax form! Are you confused about the information it contains? Student Fiscal Services offers workshops to help students understand the 1098T tax form, the Hope and Lifetime Learning tax credits, and student account or scholarship issues in relation to taxes. This class is offered free of charge.

New members are selected on the basis of achievement in scholarship, leadership and service; and serve as active members during their senior year. Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Founded in 1918, it is currently the oldest honor society on the University of Washington campus. UW Environmental Innovation Challenge
Innovation in Clean-Tech + Market Opportunity = Solutions for the Planet
If you've got a passion for clean-tech, the smarts to play in the emerging "green economy," and the desire to leverage your engineering or business background to make an impact, the new UW Environmental Innovation Challenge can provide just the platform you've been looking for.
How It Works
For the UW EIC, interdisciplinary student teams will define a clean-tech problem, design and develop the solution, and work together to produce both a prototype (or proof of concept/computer simulation) and an executive summary that outlines the market opportunity. Industry mentors are available to help students indentify potential customers and work through the process of getting their technology application to market. In the challenge itself on April 1, students will pitch their concepts and demonstrate their product/idea to a group of judges that includes technologists, entrepreneurs, and investors. The judging is based on the potential for impact, and team that wins will receive a $10,000 grand prize.
Form a Team
Sounds great! Now what? Get involved by forming a team around an idea that interests you. This can be anything: something you're working on in the lab, an idea you've read about, or a collaboration with industry. Whether you have a great idea and need some teammates to round out your skills (ie. you're an engineer in need of a business student-or vice versa), or you just want to join an existing team, read through the EIC Classifieds where potential teammates are posting information about their projects. Check it out and then submit your own post!

Dear Social Science Learning Community,
A group of students and advisers has launched a Social Science learning community, aka affinity group, called S-Link. This collaboration is envisioned as a kind of social network, intended to
1) help current social science majors interact, collaborate on outreach, community work and research projects, meet social science faculty, and share info
2) explain what the social sciences are all about to potential new majors, and
3) act as a kind of public face for the social sciences
We're moving down several roads at once, but the most visible early signs of our existence are:
1) our ever-changing blog:

2) the attached brochures highlighting social science-related panels at next week's campus-wide Career Discovery Week, and
3) a growing list of study abroad opportunities focusing on social science-related issues, themes, topics. etc. This list will soon be up on our blog and will be available at the Study Abroad Fair next Tuesday afternoon in Gould Court.
Coming attraction: The inaugural social science faculty smackdown-what we call SlinkSlam-- on March 2. We're putting together a lineup of lively and contentious faculty members from many SS departments who will be debating something along the lines of "The Economic Meltdown: Whose Fault & Which Way Out"?
