Seattle Art Museum
Betty Bowen Award Intern

Deadlines and Submission Process: Please send resume, letter of
interest, SAM application and two references to Volunteer Manager,
Kathleen Maki, Seattle Art Museum, 100 University Street, Seattle, WA
98101-2902. APPLICATIONS DUE BY May 1, 2007.

Overview: Betty Bowen (1918–1977) was a Washington native and
enthusiastic supporter of Northwest artists. Bowen’s friends established
the annual Betty Bowen Memorial Award as a celebration of her life and
to honor and continue her efforts to provide financial support to the
artists of the Pacific Northwest. Every year since 1977, one artist has
been selected by the committee to receive an unrestricted cash award.

The Betty Bowen Committee has 15 current members, several of whom have
participated since its inception in 1977. Former award winners rotate as
artist members of the Committee and all other committee positions are
permanent. SAM’s Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern and Contemporary
Art is also a member of the committee.

Project Description: Under the direction of the Assistant Curator of
Modern and Contemporary art, the Betty Bowen Intern will be responsible
for the administration of the Betty Bowen Memorial Award, communication
with the Betty Bowen committee and local artists, coordinating and
attending committee meetings, coordinating and accompanying the
committee on artist and studio visits, writing press releases, and
organizing artist’s slides and resumes using CaFE (Call for Entry), an
online tool to facilitate digital applications to the award. This
position will work with many departments within the museum, including
Curatorial, Development, Marketing and Education, to increase
cross-promotional activities for the Seattle arts community and SAM
members, and will participate in organizing, researching and archiving
information on Betty Bowen from committee members, SAM’s files, and the
UW library Special Collections/Manuscript archive.
