          Saturday Evening, October 27, 2007, 6:30 – 9pm

KOBO at Higo, International District: 604 S. Jackson Street,
     Seattle, WA 98104; (206) 381-3000

*KOBO at Higo welcomes master storyteller/poet, Larry Matsuda and
internationally acclaimed guest poet, Tess Gallagher for an evening
of heart & soul inspired poetry ~ an exquisite alchemy of memories,
     spirits and poetry.*

Larry Matsuda was born in Minidoka Relocation Center during WWII.
The incarceration experience influenced his life’s work as an
educator, community advocate and poet/writer. Matsuda will read
several poems including: “Too Young to Remember Minidoka, Idaho”,
“Bainbridge Island, They Were the First”, “Roger Shimomura at the
Sun Ya Bar”, “Sheriff Abadaba and Deputy Fluff”, “Special Tribute
     Poem: Higo Five & Dime”.

Tess Gallagher is a published poet, fiction & screenplay writer,
essayist and translator. Gallagher will read selected poems from
“Dear Ghosts” (Graywolf Press) “. . . with these spirits beside her,
Gallagher confronts her own illness and mortality and celebrates new
love and friendship in lyrics and uncompromising narratives . . .”
Gallagher will also read an excerpt from “Distant Rain” (Eastern
Washington University Press) a conversation between Japanese
novelist and Buddhist nun, Jakucho Setouchi and Tess Gallagher at
Jakuan temple in Kyoto, Japan in 1991, after the death of her late
husband, Raymond Carver, the internationally renowned short story
     writer.
