The Seattle Public Library <http://www.spl.org/> is seeking Homework
Helpers for the 2008-2009 school year.
Homework Helpers assist students with understanding their homework
assignments, developing effective study skills and learning approaches
for solving math problems. Several students are recent immigrants or
refugees who are learning English. Qualities of successful Homework
Helpers include:
· A desire to support the education of elementary, middle and high
school students. Previous experience as a teacher, tutor, parent or
youth volunteer.
· Active listening and interpersonal communication skills and a sense
of humor.
· Ability to interact with students who are new English speakers.
· Patience, flexibility and a willingness to use a variety of methods
to promote understanding.
· Strong math, grammar and reading skills. Understanding of
higher-level math (algebra, trigonometry and calculus) is helpful.
· Bilingual skills are a plus, especially if you have a conversational
ability in Amharic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Oromo, Somali, Spanish,
Tigrinya or Vietnamese.
Homework Helpers are asked to assist students for two hours per week,
