There are some great internships available through the Seattle City
Attorney's Office at the Seattle Community Court. These are great
opportunities not only for pre-law students but also for writers and
editors (see below) and anyone interested in social justice, legal issues,
and government. Americorps education grants are possible, and internship
credit is available. Other English majors who've interned with SCC have
had excellent experiences. A description is pasted below, and is also
attached, along with the application forms.
Stephanie Tschida, Community Court Grant Manager for the Seattle
City Attorney's Office, wrote,
"We are looking for at least two more interns to support Community Court.
We have released our inaugural edition of the newsletter, initiated in the
beginning by a former UW English intern (attached). We plan to create a
quarterly issue, so future writers and future journalists would be great.
We have many other opportunities and focuses as well. I also attached the
2008-2009 internship opportunities. Thanks again for your support, and
feel free to pass this along to other departments!"
The contact person is Stephanie Tschida, 206.684.7731, email
stephanie.tschida at seattle.gov -- but do read through the materials
thoroughly before making contact, and apply in the manner requested below.

INTERNSHIPS with the SEATTLE CITY ATTORNEY/SEATTLE COMMUNITY COURT
Seattle Community Court gives low-level, misdemeanor defendants the
opportunity to give back to the community where their offenses occurred.
Rather than go to jail, defendants who enter the program can help
themselves in overcoming their own problems as they complete:
" Community service to improve the neighborhood
" Social service referrals to agencies that help with public
benefits, housing, employment, education, counseling, and alternatives to
prostitution and substance abuse
Problem-solving justice programs understand that low-level, non-violent
crimes are often committed by those with significant barriers, such as
homelessness, unemployment and mental health or drug/alcohol problems.
Therapeutic and restorative justice models have proven effective at
reducing incident rates in other cities around the country. Community
Courts combine sanctions with immediate referral to comprehensive
services.
Internship activities:
1. Community Service Support
" Support Community Court defendants in completing hours through
neighborhood cleanups, traffic circle maintenance, and community garden
preparation. Help with community service development.
2. Pre-Trail Diversion (PTD) Program Support
" Participate in court intake sessions scheduling PTD defendants for
community service, enter data, and track compliance of defendants in
completing mandates.
3. Assistant to Assistant City Attorney
" Preparing court calendar, assisting prosecutor in court, tracking
data and general research projects
4. Data "mining" and evaluation study-
" Demonstrates program effectiveness through recidivism studies
among those entering, receiving interventions and completing Community
Court
New Opportunity! Education Award Opportunities:
Earn tuition funds through the AmeriCorps "Links" program if the following
internship hours within one year. First come, first served. Please
indicate your interest in earning a tuition award on the internship
application
" 300 hours: $1,000
" 450 hours: $1,250
" 675 hours: $1,800
Skills required/preferred:
" Proficient in Office programs including Excel and Word, willingness to
learn diverse information systems
" Able to pass criminal history and background.
" Comfortable with diverse populations and able to interact well with
community partners.
" Commitment to effective and innovative approach to justice. "
Please send letter of interest, resume, completed internship application,
