[Englmajors] Scholarship for Future K-12 Teachers!

All of you English majors who are preparing for teacher certification at
the UW should consider applying for the 2010 Zesbaugh scholarship. It is
intended to support students who are serious about K-12 teacher AND who
plan to enter the UW's own Masters in Teacher (MIT) program. To be
eligible, you must be a junior or senior by this Autumn Quarter. There
is one additional criterion that you should be aware of: In order to be
eligible for the Zesbaugh, a student must also be enrolled in the
Education, Learning, and Society (ELS) minor. If you would like to apply
for the Zesbaugh but are not currently in the ELS minor, please contact
Jenee Myers Twitchell, the ELS adviser, immediately at:
elsminor at u.washington.edu. Jenee can meet with you to discuss the ELS
minor and how it might fit into the remainder of your degree program.

2010 Zesbaugh Scholarship
/Supporting Undergraduate Students Interested in Teaching/
In alignment with the University of Washington’s commitment to diversity
and the College of Education’s commitment to a) increasing access to
education for all people, and b) advancing excellence through diversity,
the College of Education is charged with supporting undergraduate
students who contribute to the wide range of diverse experiences,
values, perspectives, and skills that educators need to better serve all
students.
We are especially, but not exclusively, interested in applications from
first-generation college students (neither parent or legal guardian has
a Bachelor’s degree) and students from racial and ethnic groups that are
underrepresented in the College of Education such as, but not limited to
the following: African American/Black, American Indian/Alaska Native,
Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, underrepresented
Asian American groups, etc.
*Scholarship Intent*
The Zesbaugh Scholarship Fund is intended to support selected
undergraduate students ($1,500 per quarter for one and possibly two
years) who
1) intend to apply to the UW College of Education, with special interest
in becoming a teacher, and
2) are in need of financial assistance.
*Minimum Criteria*
In order to be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the
following minimum criteria:**
1) Sincere interest in becoming a teacher
2) Junior or senior status by fall quarter 2010
3) Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at the
University of Washington or accepted as a transfer student to the
University of Washington
4) Currently enrolled in Education, Learning and Society (Education
minor) or Early Childhood and Family Services (Education major)
5) Cumulative GPA of 2.75
6) Demonstrable financial need as shown by qualifying for Federal
Student Aid or as explained in a one-page statement of need
*Zesbaugh Scholar Responsibilities*
Zesbaugh Scholars are expected to engage in activities that contribute
to their understanding of education as a field of inquiry and/or
leadership. Scholars are expected to contribute approximately 10 hours
of effort each week toward this goal. This time commitment includes
quarterly enrollment and participation in a 1-credit Zesbaugh Scholar
Seminar and participation in a research or service-learning opportunity
(determined at the conclusion of the first quarter) which may include
but is not limited to one of the following:
1. Research support for a faculty member in the College of Education
2. Leadership in the Future Educators (FEDS) or Student Washington
Education Association (SWEA) undergraduate student organizations
3. Leadership in an after-school tutoring program in a local school
4. Leadership in a school-based service-learning project
Additional responsibilities of second-year Zesbaugh Scholars, include:
1. leadership roles in the Zesbaugh Scholar Seminar, and
2. mentoring role with the first-year Zesbaugh Scholars
In addition to participating in the seminar and a research-or
service-learning opportunity, all Zesbaugh Scholars present their
research/leadership efforts at either the university-wide Undergraduate
Research Symposium or the undergraduate Service-Learning-Leadership
Spring Celebration (spring quarter).
Finalists for this scholarship will be interviewed prior to ultimate
selection.
