Greetings readers & writers! It's us, /AU: UW's Speculative Fiction
Journal/!

First of all we want to thank everyone who made the /Issue V: Invention/
launch party a huge success! Thank you to the University Book Store for
letting us host the event and agreeing to stock copies of Issue V. It
was great to hear our brave tinkerers share their inventions with the
audience. AU is proud to promote the many talented writers we've been
lucky enough to work with.

Classes are over, finals are underway, which means it's time to announce
the theme of our next journal! SO EXCITED!

The theme for /AU: Issue VI/ is...

*Oneiros: Dreams and Enchantments!*

What the Zuul is /oneiros/? Now, in order to relax the many raised
eyebrows and furrowed brow's that word may have incited, allow us to
explain. 'Oneiros' is the ancient Greek word for *dreams*. In Ovid's
/Metamorphoses/, the Oneiroi were the thousand sons of Hypnos, the god
of sleep. They are the living embodiment of dreams, so dream on resting
inventors, and share your dreams with us.

In mythology (and in the contemporary world) the dreams could be both
blessed angels and foul demons. Dreams are the place where hopes,
desires and fantasies are fulfilled, but they are also the breeding
ground of nightmares. What can start out as a perfectly normal dream
about the impending O.W.L.s can so quickly transform into a long, dark
corridor. The laws of the waking world become flexible or disappear
entirely. The Dreamer can fly (or float, perhaps in a hotel hallway in
the middle of a fistfight), travel through time (/Eternal Sunshine/
anyone?), teleport (Buffy's visit to a certain insane asylum), or move
at the speed of thought (cryogenic sleep means all kinds of time
confusion (we love confusion! (also parentheses))). The Dreamer can also
be trapped against impossible odds and insurmountable foes, all tricks
and powers failing just when they are needed most. As was the case for
the Doctor, the Dreamer can also discover that he is his own worst
enemy. And As Lieutenant Ripley reminds us, even when they are terrible
they can be a refuge from the true terror of the real world.

Confused parallel realities, labyrinthine mind-traps, enchanted sleep –
the endless expanse of the unconscious is your universe. So rest your
heads, intrepid writers, and explore!

The deadline for submissions is *Wednesday April 18, 11:59p.m. The word
limit is 3,000 words.*
