On July 11th, a report on the Enhance Sharing Session that took place at
ALA Annual in Anaheim on June 27th was distributed to the Enhance
discussion list. The report was accompanied by an invitation for
Enhance participants to continue the discussion of OCLC's proposed
"Expert Community Experiment," which was introduced at the meeting by
Glenn Patton, Director of the WorldCat Quality Management Division. The
proposed experiment involves large expansions of the capabilities of
both Database Enrichment and Enhance. The latter could include such
ideas as the sorts of bibliographic file maintenance mentioned by Amy
and Richard.

A related issue: At the BIBCO OpCo meeting, Cynthia Whitacre said that
it is OK to change headings to match the authority file on records we
don't own. She later told me through email that OCLC is working on a
general statement making the rules for Enhance more flexible. I have
been expecting some discussion on this list of the topic. I think that
the distinction between description and access is a good one. Changes
to description should be made with piece in hand. There could be some
exceptions to this rule such as really obvious typos, and data in the
wrong field, such as the date in the 300 $c (which makes for some VERY
oversized books :-). However, for changes to access points, there is
generally no need for to refer to the piece.

[Enhance] Adding subject headings to records for works we don't own
An LC subject heading we proposed has been approved, "Laser-induced
breakdown spectroscopy." There are many bib records in OCLC for works
with this phrase in the title. Is it okay to add the subject heading to
records for works our library doesn't own? I know that one doesn't
enhance a record's description if one does not have the piece in hand
since descriptive elements can vary so much, and I wouldn't consider
enhancing these records if the title were not an exact match with the
subject heading.
Thanks for your input.
