[Foodplanning] Brisbane City Council: Intensive Food Production Code

Good afternoon,

Kirsten Larsen from the Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab in Australia recommended that I contact this Food planning group regarding a project that I have been tasked with, that is, to prepare an 'Intensive Food Production' Code for Brisbane City Council (Queensland, Australia).  The code will be used by Council staff to assess development applications from the private sector that include intensive food production activities.

Roof top production in highly urbanised areas is a key focus, but other urban locales are also within the scope.  The code will include activities such as hydroponics, aquaculture, aquaponics and other intensive horticultural practices.  The code will NOT include suburban cropping, community gardens and city farms, peri-urban and sub-urban orchards, broadacre livestock rearing or sub-tropical food forestry.

I am currently undertaking desktop research to gain an understanding of the key issues from a local government perspective such as the likely external impacts on the community at large.  I assume the issues may include general nuisance issues (noise, odour, obstruction), visual amenity, water use, waste managment and pesticide/herbicide use that may occur at various stages of the food production process.

It would be great to hear from people who are working in this area, particularly from a local government regulation viewpoint.
