As noted earlier on various listservs, Maine has taken the lead on passing
an ordinance to promote local, sustainable food systems. While the legality
of the ordinance has not been tested at the State and federal levels yet,
this represents a huge victory in the local food movement.
Grown in the City launched an “Interactive Food Sovereignty Ordinance
Map<http://growninthecity.com/interactive-food-sovereignty-map/>”
to track food sovereignty ordinances across the United States, following the
unanimous passage of the first ordinance in Sedgwick,
Maine<http://growninthecity.com/2011/03/maine-town-passes-local-food-and-community-self-governance-ordinance-becomes-first-in-us-to-declare-food-sovereignty/>.
If you know of any local communities who are passing similar ordinances,
please let us know at growninthecity at gmail.com, so we can keep the map
current as this movement progresses.
In the future, we will be developing additional tools to make it simple for
ordinances to be aggregated and shared, in an attempt to make it easier for
urban planners, concerned citizens, academics, and government officials to
access this data as they craft their local policies and ordinances.
Best,
John
