>From Dee Merwin (dmerwin at u.washington.edu), Salmon in the
Classroom Coordinator:

I have an exciting opportunity for anyone who is interested
in education,
environmental outreach, interacting with K-6 grade kids,
earning $20 (for
1.5 hours) and has some free time on either Monday,
Wednesday, or Friday
mornings!

The Salmon in the Classroom program is looking for hatchery
tour guides
for the fall 1999 season. Salmon in the Classroom (SIC) is
an educational
outreach program administered by the Washington Department
of Fish and
Wildlife and Seattle Public Utilities. Classes from the
Seattle area come
to the UW hatchery for tours of the hatchery and to receive
salmon eggs.
The classes then take the eggs home and raise "salmon in
the classroom".

Tour guides will lead groups of 30 students (accompanied by
teachers and
chaperones) through several different stations at the
hatchery. The kids
learn all about how the hatchery works, the salmon life
cycle, the
difference between hatchery and wild salmon, the importance
of water
quality and other habitat requirements, etc. The tours
start on Oct.6 and
run through Dec. 6, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
 Tour guides meet
the classes at 10 and are done by 11:30 AM.

Training to be a tour guide will take place on Thursday,
September 30 and
on Friday, October 1 at 3:30 PM (you only need to attend
1). The training
will take between 1 -2 hours and refreshments will be
served to keep you
going! Please don't hesitate to become a tour guide if you
have a limited
fisheries background--we will teach you everything you need
to know at the
training session, and what we don't tell you, the kids
probably will!

Please email me with your interest and what training time
you can attend.
At the training, I will have everyone sign up for tour
dates. I would
love to have people who could guide each Monday, or each
Wednesday, etc.
But don't hesitate to participate even if you can only
guide on a few
dates.

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in
education and
the chance to positively influence young kids. With any
luck, we will
foster young environmental stewards, biologists, and
community activists!

PLEASE RSVP for the training via email and feel free to
send me questions
too.

Thanks,

Dee
