The Department of Geography and Planning of Appalachian State
University, Boone, NC, will offer a geography field course in the
Bolivian Andes, July 6 - 20, 2000. The course will focus on physical and
human processes in contemporary Andean Bolivia, with special emphasis on
rural development initiatives, glacier recession and regional impacts of
El Ni=F1o/La Ni=F1a, and the applications of GIS (geographic information
systems), GPS (global positioning systems), and remote sensing. Cost is
$900, which does not include airfare or three hours summer school
tuition at ASU. The Department of Geography at the UW has tentatively
approved the course for 4.5 credits, to be applied toward the
undergraduate degree.
