Remember, Tuesday, Feb 1 is the Geography Panel on Tech Jobs for Career Week
(1:30 p.m. in 201 Gowen).

The panelists are in truly interesting jobs!! They'll be talking about how
they got into those jobs, and you can ask questions!

On Friday, I sent a list of all but one of the panelists. Here is the
information on

Carrie Oshiro, who works for Sverdrup Civil, Inc., in Seattle as Planner/GIS
Analyst. She earned her BA in Geography and Economics at the UW in 1994 and
has an MA in progress now at the UW.

Currently, she is working in transportation and environmental planning,
which involves research, writing, editing, acquiring permits and conducting
analyses.

NOW LISTEN TO THIS: She is also responsible for hiring interns to help with
GIS and planning work. (And, the company has hired four interns from the UW
during the last year!)

Asked what the enjoys most, she says, "I enjoy working within teams of
planners, engineers, technicians, and other professionals to complete
projects. The projects I've on have addressed many of the topics that I
studied in school, such as regional transportation problems, environmental
justice, protecting wetlands, etc. In my position as a GIS analyst, I can
show others how GIS can be used in a variety of projects with good results."

She has great advice on networking and finding internships! Come to the
panel and get to meet her. Start your own networking with getting to know
her!

Remember, the other panelists are:

Ken Johnson, Systems Analyst (GIS) at Seattle Police Department
Mark Bourgeois, SMMS Implementation Team Member at RTS Networks (USA), Inc.
(Seattle)
Rolf Jacobson, Senior Planner for Snohomish County Parks (Everett)
Eugene Martin, Director of CommEn Space, Community and Environment Spatial
Analysis Center in Seattle

Hoping to see all of you,
Kate
