Please forward to students as appropriate:

Environmental Studies 202: Environmental Case Studies, Population and Health (NW/I&S)

This interdisciplinary course will examine the environmental dimensions of human population and health, including scientific, historical, social, and political aspects.

Topics will include: human population ecology and historical population trends, sociopolitical and cultural influences on specific populations, agricultural influences on human health and population distribution, and basic disease ecology and epidemiology.

A significant component of the students' learning will involve exploring these issues in greater detail by participating in a small group in-depth case study of a topic linking population and health. Examples of possible case studies include: soil contamination, public transportation and urbanization, emerging infectious disease, population and limits to growht, antibiotic resistance, and sustainable agriculture. Two sections of the course will be service-learning sections, and students can earn one additional credit for participation in service learning. See Program on the Environment advisers for more details, poeadv at u.washington.edu.
