PORT TOWNSEND MARINE SCIENCE CENTER

Marine Naturalist
 SPRING INTERNSHIP POSITION


Where: The Port Townsend Marine Science Center - a public, non-profit marine
education facility located on the pier in Fort Worden State Park.  The
facility houses a small hands-on aquarium, a fully equipped classroom and is
surrounded by miles of pristine beaches.

When:  Approximately April 1 - June 15, 2001 Weekdays and some weekends

Description: Lead/ help lead education programs for groups of all ages
  Serve as an integral member of a team of educators and docents
  Guide visitors through the marine aquarium and lead beach programs
  Develop interpretive lessons and materials to supplement curriculum
  Maintain tanks, care for animals and help keep facilities clean

Qualification:  Must work well with school-aged youth and adults
  Must have a strong marine science interest, marine science background
preferred
  Must be energetic, self motivated and willing to learn
  Must be well organization
Must have great verbal communication skills
  Must be an independent and team worker


Benefits: Ample opportunity to work with schools and the general public in
an educational capacity
  On-site training in marine biology and ecology, environmental education
techniques
  Opportunity for independent research
  Training in the use of sampling and monitoring equipment

Salary:  1000$ Stipend and rustic housing

Where: The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is a public, non-profit

are comprised of two buildings that houses a small hands-on aquarium, fully
equipped classrooms and a natural history exhibit.

When:  Approximately June 15th - Labor Day, 2001 Weekdays and some weekends

Description: Lead hands-on education programs for the general public
  Serve as educational staff for Marine Science Summer Camps both day and
overnight
  Lead interpretive programs in the marine and natural history exhibit
  Create independent projects and/or conduct independent research
  Responsible for maintain tanks, care for animals and general up keep of
both facilities
  Work with docent team

Qualification:  Must be able to work with people of all ages and from all
walks of life
  Must have some marine science and natural history background
  Must be energetic, self motivated and willing to learn
  Must have a current CPR and First Aid certification
  Must be an independent and team worker
  Must be well organization
Must have excellent verbal communication skills

Benefits: Ample opportunity to work with visiting groups and the general
public in  an educational capacity
  Training in natural history, marine biology, geology, ecology and
interpretation techniques


Salary:  1000$ Stipend
  Rustic housing
  Room and board during overnight camps.
