This course provides an understanding of the development of the historic
preservation movement in the U.S. and the breadth of contemporary
preservation activity. The legal framework for preservation, the operation
of preservation programs at national through local levels, and the
intersections between preservation and land use planning are discussed.
UrbDP 585 introduces the historic preservation tools and strategies needed
for successful professional practice.
The course is taught by two local preservation professionals: Leonard
Garfield, Director of the Museum of History and Industry, and Charles
Sundburg, of the King County Landmarks and Heritage Program.
