Job title: HABITAT RESTORATION TECHNICIAN
This is an AmeriCorps/Washington Conservation Corps position stationed at
the Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force in Everett,
Washington.
Start: October 1, 2001. Full-time position for one year.
Compensation:
$6.72 per hour; $4,725 scholarship that may be applied to student loans or
college; interest deferment on existing student loans; medical insurance;
option to earn 20 college credits and certification as an Environmental
Habitat Restoration Technician. We will provide training, both formal and
on-the-job, as needed in monitoring, volunteer program development, project
coordination, fish habitat restoration, and other job-related skills.
Job Description:
The Technician will focus her/his work in three areas:
-- Education and volunteer coordination for youth and adults focused on
merging habitat restoration with environmental education. He/she will
field-test a school/youth curriculum to meet Washington State Essential
Academic Learning Requirements (EALR=92s), work with students and community
groups throughout King and Snohomish Counties.
-- Salmonid habitat restoration project design and implementation including
stream and riparian habitat assessment, project planning, design,
permitting, scheduling, and construction. Projects include in-stream
restoration, large woody debris placement, erosion control, beaver
management, culvert replacement, riparian revegetation, project maintenance=
,
invasive species control and wetland enhancement.
-- Habitat restoration project monitoring including photo-point,
water-quality, vegetation, and hydrology monitoring, as well as training an=
d
coordinating volunteer monitoring teams.
The Task Force is committed to ensuring that the member leaves this program
with a set of skills and experience that will be useful in future jobs. We
anticipate that the member will gain a basic understanding of salmonids and
their habitat needs; how science, politics and community interests merge;
and how different agencies and organizations are approaching salmonid
recovery.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate is a motivated natural sciences or environmental
education graduate or near-graduate looking for job experience. We are
seeking an articulate, people and team-oriented member. A willingness to
work outside in inclement (as well as fantastic) weather and rough terrain
is essential. Basic word processing and spreadsheet skills are required, as
is demonstrated writing and speaking ability. Candidates must be 18 to 25
