What is NEW Leadership Puget Sound?
National Education for Women's Leadership (NEW Leadership) Puget Sound is an
award-winning program developed by the Center for American Women and
Politics at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, to educate and
empower the next generation of women leaders. It is unique in the world of
leadership programs because of its dual focus on women and on politics.
Tested and refined at the national, regional, and state levels, the model
has been shown to be effective in meeting its goals. The Center for Women &
Democracy at the University of Washington has joined with the Center for
American Women and Politics and eight other colleges and universities across
the United States to create the NEW Leadership Development Network.
NEW Leadership Puget Sound is an intensive five-day, residential institute,
to be held June 23-29 (Sunday evening through Friday afternoon), 2002, on
the Seattle campus of the University of Washington. The NEW Leadership
curriculum is designed to:
· teach students about the diversity of historical and contemporary
participation in politics and policy making
· connect students with women leaders who make a difference in the
public sphere
· help students explore the demands and rewards of leadership in a
diverse society
· cultivate students' leadership skills
· empower students to practice leadership through action
During the residential institute students will:
· meet with interesting and active women who are leaders in their
communities, in grass roots organizations, and in local and state
governments
· develop and sharpen leadership skills
· use interactive technologies to strengthen political knowledge and
abilities
· develop valuable social networks with peers and mentors
Graduates of the institute will be eligible to receive information and
assistance to help them continue to grow as leaders.
Why apply?
Every day, important decisions get made that have an impact on your life and
future. And those decisions don't just happen in the halls of government.
Politics is in your local community center, on your campus, in your
neighborhood, within organizations to which you belong, and lots of other
places. Participating in politics means being part of the decision making
process and making your voice heard. At NEW Leadership Puget Sound, you'll
get a chance to meet all kinds of women involved in politics and civic
organizations - women who are making a difference. NEW Leadership will help
you build the skills to join them.
What can participants expect to gain?
Participating in NEW Leadership Puget sound is a time to:
· further your professional development and acquire a credential you
can put on your resume
· enhance existing skills and develop new ones
· join a network of emergent and established leaders
· work and have fun with real-world women leaders and students from
across Puget Sound.
How much does it cost?
The only cost to students who are accepted for admission is a $100
non-refundable registration fee. For students who cannot meet this cost,
please contact the Program Coordinator for information about scholarship
support.
Who is eligible?
Any undergraduate in the Puget Sound region enrolled for classes in the
2001-2002 academic school year is eligible to apply. You don't need to be a
political science major or be involved in formal political roles to be
considered. In fact, we're looking for students with all kinds of interests
and backgrounds.
Apply now!
We are accepting applications until April 12, 2002, but review applications
on a rolling basis. Space is limited for the institute, so we hope you'll
use the enclosed application or visit us online to apply today. All accepted
applicants will be notified by April 17, 2002.
Remember, the Center for Women & Democracy is interested in undergraduate
students who've been involved in a wide range of activities that aren't
necessarily political in the traditional sense.
