Subject: Commencement Ceremony 2002 - Husky Stadium, June 15th
The information below is for your use in assisting students who will either
be participating in the Husky Stadium ceremony or a School/College or
Departmental ceremony. In addition we have attached "Your Steps to a Great
Commencement Day" which was designed specifically for students and puts the
information in a simple format. Please review the information and share this
with your graduating students.
Ceremony Information
Students and advisors can receive up-to-date information about the ceremony
by going to http://depts.washington.edu/commence. commence. If you are
hosting a graduation event for your students and they will require parking,
apparel or wish to purchase graduation announcements we need to have your
event information listed on our web site. Our vendors need to know the
specifics of each event prior to the students placing orders. Please check
to see if your ceremony is listed on the schedule at
http://depts.washington.edu/commence/general.html#OtherCeremony if not,
please forward us the appropriate information so that your event can be
added to the list.

Graduation vs. Commencement
Please let your students know that there is a difference between signing up
to officially graduate and signing up for the Commencement Ceremony.
Graduation is the completion of degree requirements to earn a University of
Washington diploma. To graduate and obtain a diploma, students need to fill
out the proper paperwork from either the Office of Graduation and Academic
Records (undergraduates) or The Graduate School (graduates). Please see
Eligibility to Participate below, for more information. Commencement is the
ceremony held every June to commemorate the achievement of the graduating
students. To participate in the Commencement Ceremony, students must
register via the Commencement Web Registration/Order Form at
http://depts.washington.edu/commence, after completing their application to
graduate.
Eligibility to Participate
Bachelors: Students who earned Bachelors degrees during the following
quarters: Summer 2001, Autumn 2001, Winter 2002, or have completed the
application for graduation with their undergraduate advisors for Spring 2002
and Summer 2002 are eligible. After application for graduation has been
completed and received by the Office of Graduation and Academic Records,
(206) 543-1803, students will be able to complete the Commencement Web
Registration/Order Form.
Masters: Students who earned Masters degrees during the following quarters:
Summer 2001, Autumn 2001, Winter 2002, or have completed the Graduate
Schools on-line Masters Request to Graduate Form at
http://www.grad.washington.edu/stsv/mastapp.htm for Spring 2002 or Summer
2002 are eligible. Students expecting to complete Summer 2002, who wish to
participate in the ceremony, must complete the Masters Request to Graduate
Form for Summer Quarter, April 13th through April 26th, before going to the
Commencement Web Registration/Order Form.
Doctoral: Students who earned Doctoral degrees during the following
quarters: Summer 2001, Autumn 2001, Winter 2002, or who expect to complete
in Spring 2002 or Summer 2002 are eligible to participate. Those students
completing Spring 2002 or Summer 2002, who wish to participate in the
ceremony, should register/order via the Commencement Web Registration/Order
Form. The Graduate School will review the Commencement registration and give
final approval on ceremony participation. If not approved by the Graduate
School, you will be notified and the money for cap and gown will be
refunded. If you do not hear from us, or the Graduate School, by May 28th
you should assume you have been approved to participate.
Professional: Candidates for J.D., M.D., D.D.S., and Pharm.D. Degrees are
honored in separate ceremonies. However, they may also participate in the
main University ceremony by registering on the Commencement Web
Registration/Order Form.
Thank you for your assistance in this process.
