URGENT: Undergraduates in Research & Public Service (fwd)

Dear Geography faculty and students:

Each summer we have produced a report for the Provost highlighting how
many of our students engage in either direct faculty research or public
service via service learning or internships in the public sector. This
impressive report goes a long way toward showing how central a role public
service plays in the way we define ourselves as students and faculty, and
the powerful collective impact our students make on the community.

This year the College is gathering this data, and is asking for it by May
1--two months sooner than usual. They of course just sprung this reporting
assignment on us at the end of this last week! This is always a daunting
accounting task because we have very few official sources which keep track
of these activities

Thus I plead with you to send me names, projects, titles, sponsoring
agencies, etc, to meet these guidelines. If you have any doubt whether
something "counts," send it to me anyway. Basically, any student
involvement in a faculty research project (broadly defined, so as to
include, for instance, data gathering, library research, etc) can count,
as can any public sector internship students had, whether or not they
received credit. Operative dates are September 2001-April, 2002, and the
minimum info I need to list something is a student name, a sponsoring
agency (if applicable), and some flavor of the research or internship or
volunteer work.

Please try and get this stuff to me by Monday, April 29. Thanks.

Rick Roth
