The Seattle Fire Department has an opening for a GIS intern. We have
posted the announcement (JOB 39-2002) on our job board, outside Smith 415.

In support of the implementation of its new CAD/911 system, the Seattle
Fire Department is planning to offer paid internship opportunities for
fall/winter/spring quarters of 2002/2003. Internships would provide the
student with exposure to one or more of the following:
ArcGIS/ArcInfo software, customized ArcGIS/ArcInfo graphical user
interfaces, Windows 2000 operating system, ArcView, and a new Computer
Aided Dispatch/911 system (CAD/911), all within a large municipal public
> > The work plans for these internships vary but may include one or
more of the following:
> > =B7 Data Conversion: convert tabular and/or shapefile/coverage data
> using GIS for use in CAD/911 system.
> > =B7 Street Database Inventory: Collect and verify data in field for
the City's Street Network Database.
> > =B7 Data Collection and Correction: Work with City GIS staff to
identify data inconsistencies and make the necessary corrections. This
task involves exposure to network analysis and use of ArcInfo or ArcView.
> > =B7 Develop Software Tools: Develop tools to convert and update City
GIS data from Arc/Info data sets to the CAD/911 system. Will require
experience in VB or C (.NET optional) with ArcGIS or MapObjects, or
ArcInfo AML coding.
> > =B7 Other tasks: Provide user support and training, map creation,
quality control, software testing, and participation as needed in
implementing GIS functionality in the CAD/911 dispatch system.
> > Requirements: ArcInfo, ArcView, Visual Basic, C(.NET), VBA or other
specific software experience is highly desirable for some but not all
work plans in this internship. However, applicants must possess basic
computer skills. The student must be enrolled in Fall and/or Winter
quarter. Work schedules will be flexible enough to fit most class
