Outline for Aviation Management Course: GTTL 599B WI 04 SLN 8931
Course objectives -- this course integrates aviation-related engineering, marketing, logistics, global trade, transport geography and finance disciplines. The course will provide an introduction to airplane, airport and air traffic management technology, aircraft/air traffic control/airline terminology, and aviation practice.
Structure:
v One 3-hour session from Wednesday January 13 through March 2, 2004, 3:30 - 6:30.
v Student-instructor contact via e-mail and/or phone:
o Barrie Austin (Barrie.Austin at ATTBI.com and 425-392-5760)
o Ray Waldmann (RaymondjWaldmann at MSN.com and 425-462-8460)
Grading:
v Individual Class Participation: 20% of grade
v Group work (Note: Everyone in a group will get same grade. This is a group effort, just like the real world!)
o Project Reports, 5 - 10 pages. Aural about 15 minutes. 25% of grade.
v Simulation model ("Open Skies") which can be individual or group. Key dates are:
§ First Plan submitted in electronic format, Session 3 (January 27, 2004)
§ Discussion and Feedback, Session 4 (February 3, 2004)
§ Second plan submitted electronically, Session 5 (February 10)
§ Discussion and Feedback, Session 6 (February 17) 25% of grade is based on your second plan
§ Class discussion of results Session 7 (February 24)
v Final: Written answers to 4 questions. 30% of grade
Instructors:
Barrie Austin: Chief Engineer emeritus, Boeing Commercial Airplane Company, and formerly Director of Government Affairs.
Raymond Waldmann: Lecturer at the UW Business School and formerly Vice President, International Business, for The Boeing Company.
Format of course:
There will be a short lecture and extensive class discussion based on assigned readings each week supplemented by group work using an airline planning simulation model.
