Internship Opportunity at the City of Bellevue Transportation Department

The City of Bellevue Transportation Department is seeking two Interns to assist with projects and programs in the Planning Division. The Interns will support two distinct work programs:  the Transportation Demand Management program and Pedestrian and Bicycle System Planning. Additionally, assignments in other areas of Transportation Planning may be considered, as needs arise that match the skills and interests of the Interns.

Transportation Demand Management program.  Potential work program items include: 
•	Create an inventory of downtown buildings, including tenants, employee population, square footage, and parking management practices 
•	Create a database to compile and compare data reported by Property Managers in annual Transportation Management Plan (TMP) Report Forms; develop recommendations for ongoing monitoring of compliance with Transportation Management Plan conditions
•	Compile information and compose narratives regarding the experience of Bellevue employers with commute trip reduction strategies, particularly for employers recently moving into downtown Bellevue. 
•	Research transportation demand management (TDM) programs in other parts of the country and analyze for applicability in Bellevue
•	Lead implementation of limited duration projects for large employers affected by the Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) Law to encourage reduction in drive-alone commuting to Bellevue worksites
•	Assist staff in developing a map of downtown Bellevue oriented for non-drive-alone commuters
•	Assist staff in implementing a program to reduce solo drop-off trips to local elementary schools
•	Support seasonal TDM outreach efforts.

Pedestrian and Bicycle System Planning.  Potential work program items include: 
•	Complete the inventory of bicycle facilities and update Bellevue’s GIS coverage
•	Document pedestrian and bicycle level of service based on specific measured criteria and map the level of service
•	Conduct field checks to document needed improvements to the existing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
•	Provide support for an update of the Bellevue Pedestrian and Bicycle Transportation Plan, including a new ADA Implementation Plan component
•	Update and maintain the “Pedestrian and Bicycle” web site
•	Update the Bike Bellevue map.

Desired Skills and Qualifications
•	Full-time enrollment at a local university in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Geography, Civil Engineering or a related field.
•	General understanding of the concepts and techniques of commute trip reduction and transportation demand management
•	Familiarity with issues relating to ADA accommodation
•	Familiarity with factors that influence the attractiveness of walking and bicycling and the features that affect the level of service for pedestrians and bicyclists
•	Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and ArcView GIS
•	Ability to do field work required to inventory and document the pedestrian and bicycle system
•	Safe driving record and valid current Washington State driver's license. 
Availability
June 2006 through graduation.  Bellevue prefers a student who will work full-time during the summer and school breaks, and part time--up to 20 hours per week--when school is in session.

Compensation
Pay is on an hourly basis; the scale ranges from $11.71 to $16.15 per hour.  Actual rate will depend on skills and experience of candidate. There are no fringe benefits (paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, or health insurance) offered with Intern positions.
