Doug Mercer was the student choice this year for the faculty teaching award, and would like to thank the students as follows:

***************************************************
Dear graduating seniors,

What an amazing four (plus?) years it has been for you! The slow metamorphosis
that occurs in college may be the most dramatic of your life. Don’t
underestimate what has happened in these years. It’s really amazing!

For those of you who have taken my classes, may I offer a special thank you.
You have taught me how to teach, enduring my mis-steps, my foot-in-the-mouth as
well as my better moments. You have had a special part in my own transformation
a teacher. You see, we HAVE been learning together.

From every one of you I have learned something new, in substance and in
experience. You have introduced me to new environmental issues, perspectives on
inequality, and how to explore our changing region. You have helped me see my
mistakes as a teacher and have commended me for my successes. Most importantly,
you have taught me about the uniqueness of each individual’s experience in a
fast-changing world that is, at the same time, thrilling and threatening. I
have become a better teacher, I think, because of YOU.

Congratulations, graduates! Best of luck on your next transformation!

Sincerely,

Doug
