GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Technician

Basic Description:
Under general direction, update and maintain room data related to the
University floor plan GIS. Create and implement work plans for business data
updates. Provide data, drawings and charts as necessary to review and
illustrate space assignments. Conduct surveys of departmental space
occupancies and perform various GIS-related tasks for all of the University
of Washington. Preferred candidate will be enrolled in or have completed
study in a geospatial-oriented field such as geography, urban planning or
landscape architecture. If still matriculating, a junior or senior level is
preferred. The position will be part-time, 10-20 hours per week, starting in
June.
Duties & Responsibilities:
(50%) In carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this position, the
incumbent will consult with colleges and departments regarding facilities
and room information, and update the database to reflect organizational,
room use or description changes.
(20%) The individual hired will compile data and develop reports on space
utilization and other issues using Access and Excel.
(30% across these) Other duties will include the following:
* Respond to various ad-hoc requests from University planners and
administrators for data and GIS-generated maps.
* Conduct specific studies related to space and facilities planning
and use.
* Provide other GIS-related support as needed.
Supervision Received:
The position will report to the Director, Capital Resources Planning, and
will receive direction from the GIS Manager.
Required Skills:
Knowledge and experience in GIS operations and data.
Knowledge of ESRI software: ArcGIS Desktop 9.x or 10.
Familiarity with ArcGIS Server and SDE.
Experience with relational databases including the ability to develop ad-hoc
queries with Oracle or Access.
Ability to analyze data and complex space issues, and to prepare written
recommendations and reports.
Advanced spreadsheet skills, intermediate word processing skills, and
familiarity with Office Suite 2003.
Candidate must possess exemplary customer service skills. Inherent to
success in this position is the ability to anticipate needs, manage
proactively, take initiative, work independently, communicate effectively,
and exercise good judgment.
Desired Skills:
Knowledge of GIS process automation with Python.
Knowledge of Autocad.
Familiarity with source code control (CVS) a plus.
