Experiential Learning Coordinator
African Studies Program
Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies

Hours: 20 hours per week
Pay: 50% of $3,200 per month
Dates of Employment: Sept. 1, 2005 - June 30, 2007

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Education, International Studies, or
related field, AND a minimum of two years experience in program
management, including outreach activities. Must have computer experience
with word processing, and web creation and maintenance.

Desired: Master's degree in International Studies with an emphasis in
African Studies is preferred. Grant-writing and proposal development
skills are desired. Familiarity with academic environment and student
advising is a plus.

Primary Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of this job will be centered around
counseling students and working closely with them to ensure the maximum
benefit from their service-learning experience as an intern. This will
include, but not be limited to:
Meet on a regular basis with students in placements and read and
comment on their journals
Organize and facilitate final student "capstone" presentations,
inviting interested community members and supervisors
Provide consultation individually with students and agency
representatives, as needed
Coordinate quarterly evaluations of each student/site placement


Additional duties will include:
Independently identify and develop relationships with African
agencies and community groups, and non-government organizations where
students might do internships and service-learning
Present at annual faculty workshops that will highlight internship
and service-learning opportunities; assist with organization and
coordination of these workshops
Work with faculty to link these internship and service-learning
opportunities to courses
Publicize these opportunities across campus by attending student
activity fairs, visiting classes, and meeting individually with students
Independently develop and maintain website for the program
Coordinate internship and service-learning placements
Serve as main contact person for agencies, organizations, and
supervisors
Research and develop other funding opportunities to sustain
program
Develop binder of available placements and basic information about
each placement
Assist African Studies Chair and Co-Directors with other
activities as needed
