The topic for this year's annual conference is Global Energy Supplies: Scarcity, Dependency, Alternatives, and the Challenges for International Commerce. This is a timely topic, and should be a very interesting event.

The conference will be held on the UW campus in Kane Hall's Walker-Ames room on May 31st from 2:30 until 5:30, with reception. We will send out a more detailed invitation closer to the conference date. There is no attendance fee.

Thank you for your interest and support, and as always, please pardon any double-postings. We appreciate your help in spreading the word.

2.) May 31st, 2006: ANTI-APARTHEID COMBATANT TURNED PEACE ACTIVIST Yazir Henri to address Seattle community

Anti-apartheid combatant turned peace activist and scholar, Yazir Henri will address the questions: how does one make the decision to take up arms in a political struggle? And, once the armed struggle has ended, how does one forge a peaceful life among former enemies?

WHO: Yazir Henri

WHEN: 7:00 pm, Wednesday, May 31

WHERE: Kane Hall, Room 210, University of Washington, Seattle

This lecture is FREE and open to the public. It is part of the Veterans of Inter-communal Violence seminar series, sponsored by the Clowes Center for Conflict and Dialogue Studies and the Comparative History of Ideas Program at the University of Washington.

DETAILS:

Yazir Henri is the co-founder and director of the Direct Action Centre for Peace and Memory in Cape Town, South Africa. Since 1997, the centre has worked with former combatants, torture survivors and political prisoners. Henri joined Umkhonto We Sizwe (MK), the military wing of the African National Conference at age 16, when the apartheid government still held power over South Africa. He received military training in Angola and the Soviet Union, and returned to South Africa as an MK officer, only to be imprisoned for terrorism and treason. Henri emerged from the hands of the police, and from an ambivalent testimony before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to re-define himself as a poet, writer and peace activist.

SERIES AND SPONSOR INFORMATION:

The Clowes Center was formed in 2004 in order to provide a forum within which students, faculty and members of our communities (both local and international) can develop projects, programs, events and research that explore specific efforts to create and sustain dialogue across social and political, and national boundaries.

This seminar will be the first in the Veterans of Inter-communal Violence series, sponsored by the Clowes Center. These seminars will illustrate different ways that groups come to adopt violent means for change, and different ways that such people can transform their worlds towards peaceful ends.

For more information, or to schedule an interview with Mr. Henri, please contact Theron Stevenson at 206-427-2212 or at theron at u.washington.edu.

Put Your Ideals into Practice: Dr. Christopher Reveley in Liberia. Please join Doctors Without Borders' aid worker, Dr. Christopher Reveley, as he shares his recent experience working as an anesthesiologist in war-torn Monrovia, Liberia. After Dr. Reveley's presentation, aid worker Molly Sweeney, RN and recruiter for the organization will be on hand to answer questions about getting involved with Doctors Without Borders'
medical humanitarian work.

4.) June 10th, 2006: Ballard Art Walk

Time: 6:00 - 9:00 PM

Location: Artwalk ~ Downtown Ballard
PATH photography ~ Brazillis, 5404 22nd Ave

Cost: Free and open to the public

Photography from PATH staff member, Mike Wang's trip to Bolivia will be available for viewing and purchase at Brazillis boutique.

Artist Statement:

The Bolivia Project took place under the aegis of PATH. Dr. Matthew Steele, an anthropologist with PATH, requested that I join his team investigating the progress of a new rapid-result test for Chlamydia, in rural and urban clinics. My role in the investigation was to visually capture the importance of reproductive health in a developing nation.

During our time in Bolivia, we traveled to diverse areas interviewing and photographing those truly impacted by our work at PATH. From the doctors and nurses at the clinics to the women and children they serve, I saw a nation replete with laughter, work, illness, the boredom of long stays in waiting rooms, and the excitement of an election day.

One day I took photographs of twelve children in a tiny, unfurnished house. Amidst their shyness and high spirits I found the culmination of all my photographic experience. All I knew of people, of light, of expression and composition was applied to a new place and purpose. All along it had been there in me, and it was all made new again.

5.) June 15, 2006 Silent Auction Benefit for Haitian Health Allies

Thursday, June 15, 2006, from 6pm-10pm at Phinney Community Hall

Contact: Marie-Florence Shadlen, MD

(mshadlen at u.washington.edu)

The book chosen for all incoming UW freshmen to read this fall is Tracy Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains. This riveting account of Dr. Paul Farmer's work in Peru, Cuba, Russia, and the Central Plateau of Haiti is a call to action for promoting health equity beyond our borders.

In the Nov. 17, 2005 issue of University Week, Dean Ingebritsen said that this book "speaks to the values of the campus and to two leaders- the president and the provost- who have come to the campus to move us in a direction centered around (global education)."

As a natural extension of Harborview Medical Center's mission to serve the most vulnerable members of the local community, a group of its employees formed a non-profit organization named Haitian Health Allies (www.haitianhealthallies.com). Their work was featured in the July 7, 2005 issue of University Week.

Haitian Health Allies will provide a festive evening in support of improving the lives of orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS in Southeast Haiti. The event entitled "Caribbean Fantasy" will include a silent auction, raffle, light food, and live music and entertainment.

The UW community is welcomed to attend this fundraiser on Thursday, June 15, 2006, from 6pm-10pm at Phinney Community Hall (6532 Phinney Ave N, 98101). Call Florence Shadlen (206) 612-3083 to purchase tickets at $25 each.

"We are a community-based organization," said Marie-Florence Shadlen, MD of Haitian Health Allies. "With the support of individual contributors, we have been the only provider of stipends for AIDS orphans in Southeast Haiti to cover some of the costs for sanitation, nutrition, and transportation to health facilities. Attendance at the "Caribbean Fantasy" silent auction provides a fast and easy way for the Seattle community to support our work."

Haitian Health Allies works with its 501©3 non-profit fiscal agent Fonkoze USA to bolster Southeast Haiti's ability to respond to unmet needs for nutrition, education, basic health care, and social support among persons living with HIV/AIDS. 2) Earthquake in Indonesia - We Need Your Help

As you may have already learned, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Yogayakarta, Indonesia today at dawn while most people were still in bed. Early reports from the scene and Uplift International staff in Indonesia indicate that thousands have been killed and many more have been injured. We are mounting a response to aid the survivors. Many of you supported our efforts to bring aid to the survivors of the t! sunami in Indonesia and you know how quickly and effectively we respond to disasters like this.

In an earthquake situation, doctors are desperately needed to save lives. Our long time partner in Indonesia, the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI), represents over 58,000 doctors and we are working with them to mount an effective response. The Indonesian doctors are ready and prepared to help their own people in Yogakarta by volunteering to diagnose and treat the wounded in hospitals and clinics. Together with emergency supplies, the doctors will care for the wounded and save the lives of men, women and children.

IDI and Uplift International have done this before. Together, in response to the tsunami that devestated Aceh, we place over 300 doctors in the field for five months to care for survivors. We also sent 25 tons of medcines and medical supplies.

We need your support in the effort to help the Indonesian doctors do what they do best - help their own people in a time of crisis.
