2008 Course Development Awards

UW African Studies Program

Building a Transnational Curriculum for the Greater Horn of Africa

The African Studies Program invites applications for its 2008 Course Development Awards. The US Department of Education recently funded our Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language (UISFL) Project, Building a Transnational Curriculum for the Greater Horn of Africa. These course development awards aim to increase the number of undergraduate courses taught at UW with significant content on the Horn of Africa and/or contemporary Horn of Africa diasporas. Awards will support the development of new undergraduate courses with substantial (one-third or more) content on the Horn of Africa and/or recent Horn of Africa diasporas, or the significant addition of such content to already-existing courses.

We are particularly interested in proposals that through course materials and/or experiential learning and internship options draw connections among issues and communities in the Horn (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya) and among Horn of Africa immigrant groups based in the Pacific Northwest. We envision all funded courses as counting towards our interdisciplinary tri-campus minor on Africa and the recent African Diaspora. Tenure-line faculty and lecturers from all units at the three campuses of the University of Washington who teach undergraduate courses are invited to apply.

Awards will consist of $1,500 to be paid as summer salary during 2008. All awardees will be required to participate in the African Studies Curriculum Development Workshop to be held in late September 2008 where they will circulate and discuss their draft syllabi. The intention of the award is that the proposed course must be offered during the 2008-09 academic year, and on a regular basis thereafter. Awardees' new or revised detailed course syllabi must be submitted by Sept. 15, 2008.

Applicants should submit a two-page CV together with a one- to two-page proposal explaining how the new or revised course will incorporate substantial material on the Horn of Africa and its Diaspora. Proposals for the revision of already-existing courses must include a copy of the current syllabus. We plan to award three grants in 2008.

Please submit applications to Nancy Farwell, Chair, African Studies Program, nfarwell at u.washington.edu, no later than June 16, 2008. Award notifications will be sent out by June 23, 2008.
