A sampling of break-out sessions:
Christian Theodosis, of the University of Chicago, and Jose Teruel, of Georgetown University and the Pan American Heath Organization, will explore the history and hubris of health and humanitarian aid and the role of health professionals in preventing, transforming and mitigating the effects of conflict.
Sutapa Basu, PhD, the executive director of the internationally known the UW’s Women’s Center, will talk with Hope O'Brien of Physicians for Human Rights and Dr. Naseem Assefi, author of a forthcoming novel set in modern-day Afghanistan, about women and war.
Drs. Horton, Kinzie and Ghannam will talk about why U.S. torture is not behind us, the complicity of health care workers in torture and human rights abuses, the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center, and rehabilitation of torture victims.
Drs. Machlis, Thompson and Takaro will talk about the ecology of warfare and the role of climate change, with a special focus on Iraq.
Other topics: refugees, conflict analysis for health workers, origins and consequences of war, reporting on war in the media, documentary film making, treating PTSD, how to promote peace through health, and much much more...
There will be arts and entertainment, too:
Health Alliance International is sponsoring the opening reception (4 pm Friday)
Global Health Council is sponsoring a dessert reception (8:30 pm Friday)
The pre-conference session is bold and innovative: expanding the definition of war to include policy-implemented wars that structurally violate basic human dignity and equality under the color of law and legitimacy.
