The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has just announced 78 grants to
explore bold and largely unproven ways to improve global health. The
press release is available at

The grants of US$100,000 each will be made to investigators from 18
countries and 6 continents. They mark the fourth round of funding from
Grand Challenges Explorations, an initiative to help lower the barriers
for testing innovative ideas in global health. For more details on the

* Create New Technologies to Improve the Health of Mothers and Newborns
* Create New Ways to Protect Against Infectious Disease
* Create New Technologies for Contraception

Topics for Round 6 will be announced in September 2010. Additional
