PROFESSOR RAMANATHAN RAGURAM is a well-known teacher and researcher in the field of psychiatry. He worked for over two decades as Professor of Psychiatry & Chairman of the Residency Training Program at the National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (NIMHANS). Subsequently he went over to the United Arab Emirates to initiate a post-graduate residency program in psychiatry, begun for the first time in that region. After completing this assignment, he is currently working as Professor & Head of the Dept of Psychiatry at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore.
His main interest has been in the field of cultural psychiatry wherein he has employed anthropological approaches to examine cultural and contextual determinants of psychiatric problems. A Commonwealth Fellowship facilitated his tenure at the Department of Cultural Anthropology at the University College London, and subsequently, as a World Health Organization Fellow he worked at the Department of Culture, Community, and Health Studies at the University of Toronto. He was a Consultant to the World Mental Health Report prepared by the Department of Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School. He was a Visiting Professor under the NIMHANS-FULBRIGHT Academic Initiative Program at the Department of Psychiatry, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Jersey, and there, was instrumental in initiating a cross cultural exchange program of medical students and psychiatric residents. He officiated as the coordinator for ICD-10 Field Trials in India. He has recently been invited to join the Board of Governors of the World Association of Cultural Psychiatry, representing the South Asian region. He is the Chairperson of the Task Force on Media & Mental Health of the Indian Psychiatric Society.
He has over 50 research publications and chapters in books. In particular he has been involved in examining cultural and social factors influencing the experience of stigma. He also carried out a field study exploring the impact of traditional healing methods on the severely mentally ill. He officiates as a trustee in an Non-Governmental Organization Paadhai which is involved in education for underprivileged children in rural India. Besides his academic involvements, Professor Raguram is a nature enthusiast, an avid bird watcher and has an abiding interest in the visual arts.
