Playing French Seattle Festival

!!20 free tickets a night to ECC students/groups!!

The third annual Playing French Seattle festival of dramatic works will
feature Romanian-born playwright Matei Visniec and also includes work by
Georges Feydeau, Honoré de Balzac, and Samuel Beckett. The festival runs
October 20 - November 1 at the University of Washington's Ethnic Cultural
Theatre.

Two works by Visniec will be staged: "Le Deuxième Tilleul à Gauche" and "Old
Clown Wanted." University of Washington doctorial candidate Otilia Baraboi will
open the festival on October 20 and introduce Visniec's plays.

In September 1987, Visniec left Romania for France, where he was granted
political asylum. His absurdist plays, written in French, have been staged in
more than 30 countries. In Romania, after the fall of Communism, Matéi Visniec
has become one of the most frequently performed authors.

Honoré de Balzac, novelist of "La Comedie Humaine," wrote five plays before
his death in 1850. The last of which, "Le Faiseur," was accepted by the Comedie
Française but not staged there until 143 years later, in 1993. This new
bilingual (French /English) adaptation is directed by Steeplechase Producer Tom
Ansart. The central character of the play, Mercadet, is a stock speculator who
has been swindled by his business partner, Godeau. The play is a foreshadowing
of Beckett's "Waiting for Godot."

Playing French Seattle is a registered student organization at the UW, to join

Study Abroad Student Panel / Welcome-Back Evening

The Near Eastern Languages and Cultures Student Association (NELC-SA) invites
all of you to attend an exciting and educational upcoming event that will take
place on October 21, from 6-8 PM, in Denny 215a (NELC Lounge). A panel of UW
students will discuss their experiences studying abroad in the Near East this
past summer. The event grants the UW community the rare opportunity to hear
stories, insights, and advice from students who have recently studied in North
Africa, Southwest Asia (i.e. the Middle East), and Central Asia.

Held on the evening of the UW Study Abroad Fair, this event will function as a
great resource for students applying for study abroad programs and funding. We
hope you can all join us as this will prove to be a very informative and
interesting evening.

As this is the first campus-wide NELC-SA event of the school year, it will also
serve as a welcome-back evening, during which time students and faculty can
socialize and network. Light refreshments will be
served.

Be Apart of a Study on Latina College Student Health!!

My name is Jill Mount I am a doctoral student in nursing at the University of
Washington and I would like to recruit participants for my study "The Health
Effects of Attending College for Undergraduate Latina College Students and
their Families". The purpose of this study is to describe how being a college
student affects the health of Latina college students and their families.

The perceptions about how attending college affects the health of Latina
college students and their families will be used by nurse researchers to create
culturally congruent interventions to promote the health of Latina college
students and their families and learning about their perspectives will aid in
reducing barriers related to family/school role conflict enabling Latinas to
attain higher education in greater numbers. This study has been approved by the
Human Subjects Committee of the University of
Washington and has strict guidelines that I must follow to protect the rights
of the women I will interview.

I am doing 3 to 4 focus groups, which will be audio-recorded and each will have
up to 12 participants. The groups will last about two hours at the Ethnic
Cultural Center and refreshments will be served. Participants will attend one
focus group. At the end of the focus group each participant will be given a 25
dollar UW Bookstore gift card to reimburse her for her time. If you are
currently an undergraduate woman student at UW-Seattle who is over 18 years of
age, a US citizen, self-identify as Latina, Hispanic, Chicana, or
Mexican-American, Cuban, or Puerto Rican, or if your family originates from
Central or South America or Spain you are eligible to be in this study. If you
would like to participate in the study or have questions, please call Jill
Mount at 206-399-0753 or send an e-mail to mountj at u.washington.edu (although I
cannot ensure the confidentiality of information sent via e-mail).
Sincerely,

Jill K. Mount, RN, MSN, PhC
