Subject: Needs Volunteers to present "Japan in the Schools"

The Japan-America Society is recruiting volunteers to introduce Japanese
language and culture to local classrooms during the new school year.
Interested individuals may visit either elementary schools as Japan in a
Suitcase volunteers or high school Japanese language classrooms as
participants in Japanese Language and Culture Visits. School visits are
usually scheduled between 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on weekdays, from October to
June. Japan-America Society will coordinate Scheduling and logistical
arrangements between schools and volunteers.

Japanese Language and Culture Visits
Volunteers with near-native to native fluency in oral and written Japanese
visit high schools in the Puget sound area to provide Japanese language
students with opportunities to practice speaking Japanese. This is a
"mini-immersion" experience in which groups of volunteers provide students
with opportunities to use recently acquired Japanese language skills to
converse with native speakers.

Japan in a Suitcase
Teams of English-and Japanese-speaking volunteers will visit schools to
introduce Japan and Japanese culture to first through third grade elementary
school students. Each team will be provided with a curriculum outline.
Volunteers will help students learn how to say some Japanese greetings, how
to count in Japanese, and how to write a few simple Kanji through hands-on
activities. The Japan in a Suitcase training workshop will enable
volunteers to practice presentations and learn techniques for engaging young
children.

We will have training workshops in September and October. Date and time are
not set up yet, but I will inform you as soon as possible. For further
information and register, please contact to Miki Yoshizawa at any time. I
am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
