JAS Quarterly Business Briefing featuring Marie Anchordoguy

The Japan-American Society kicks off its 2003 regular programming with a
Quarterly Business Briefing on January 30 featuring Marie Anchordoguy, head
of the Japan Studies Program at the Henry M. Jackson School of International
Studies at the University of Washington. Anchordoguy is one of the United
States' leading specialists on Japanese industrial policy, particularly as
it addresses the computer and telecommunications industries. She holds
bachelor's degrees in both Japanese Studies and Music from the University of
California Berkeley. Her M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees are also from the Haas
School of Business at Berkeley, where she was one of the first business
school doctorates to study Japanese industrial policy using Japanese
materials and field research in Japan. She has studied and lived in Japan
for almost ten years. After giving a brief update on Japan's economy today,
Anchordoguy will discuss key causes of Japan's economic problems. Much of
her focus will be on how a changing international environment and rapid
technological change have made many of Japan's capitalist institutions
obsolete. In her discussion, she will draw on her current research on
Japan's telecommunications, computer software, and semiconductor industries.
Japan-American Society Quarterly Business Briefings are co-sponsored by the
Global Business Center and the East Asia Center at the University of
Washington.
