X Resolutions

Not sure about individual user settings for X, but where did you change
the order of resolutions?  I think you change the order under the
"screen" section with the device for the X-server that you use (probably
SVGA?).

Here is an excerpt...
Section "Screen"
   Driver          "SVGA"
   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
   Device          "Primary Card"
   Monitor         "Primary Monitor"
   DefaultColorDepth 32
   BlankTime       20
   StandbyTime     40
   SuspendTime     60
   SubSection "Display"
      Depth        8
       ^^^^^^^^^^ --> make sure you changed the order for the depth that
you use.
   Modes        "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
   EndSubSection
