I think I see your problem; you never built the new kernel!!

After doing your 'make dep' you ought to skip the 'make clean' and instead
run 'make zImage' or whichever kernel build you'd like.  After compiling
you need to copy the new kernel somewhere suitable (like /boot) and then
modify LILO to be able to boot the new kernel.  These instructions should
be on your system in /usr/src/linux/README.
