some questions

I've got a small (3 machines) local lan going at home, with one modem
set up to dial out and do IP masqing when it gets requests at the
gateway. When I boot up my Mandrake machine, it for some reason wants
to talk to the internet during the boot process, causing my modem to
dial out. Specifically, the system logger, the INND system, and
something in startx try sending out packets. SO the question is: why do
they do this, and is there a way to turn it off, for convenience?
Next question: When using just plain Enlightenment (that is, without
GNOME), when I start kfm or mc (I like graphical file browsers, sue me)
they put all my icons from my GNOME or KDE desktop up on my screen.
Then when I am done with the file manager, they don't go away/ Is there
a way to do this easily?
More questions: Is there a way to place the Enlightenment pager in the
GNOME taskbar (in place of the GNOME one already there)? I haven'f
figured out how yet.
Thanks all!
