Hmmm, I have a 3c509 in this box now running slackware 7.0, but I know that
there are different revs for the chipsets used on these NICs. You shouldn't
have to specify the irq/io address for the card either. One possibility
would be to try running isapnp to see if that will pick up the card at all.
Here's what info I have for my 3com:
3c509tp
8352-00 Rev C (handwritten on board)
3Com chip-number (the big central chip) is 8350-01
Let us know what you've got and we can go from there...
