I ran into that problem too a long time ago when I was checking out
GNOME before reverting back to KDE.

It had something to do with Gnome saving the current dir I was in at the
time of exiting in my personal session settings when I exited GNOME.  

I think I eventually found that dir name set in one of the session files
in the ~/.gnome dir.

Try grep'ing for that dir name in ~/.gnome and the offending
settings file should turn up, that's how I found it but I don't
remember which file it was.
