Linux Directory Structure

After using linux for many years now, it just hit me the other day that I have no clue as to why Unix organizes its programs and files in such a manner. What is the significance of /sbin/ and /usr/ and why is there a bin dir in both / and /usr/ ?

Can anyone perhaps lend a little technical definition to the linux directory hierarchy?
