x-windows mem requirements

Well, I just got pressed into becoming a small network admin here. A teacher at
my school got a palet of those government computers, they're all pretty much
pentium 90's, with a couple of 100's. She wants me to help her set them up for
use mainly as web computers for the classrooms. Most of them have 16MB of ram,
some 32MB. My question is, how well is linux going to run x-windows with 16MB
of ram? Would that be acceptable for browsing the web? I haven't had a chance
to work with or install linux on lower end computers yet, so I'm not sure how
well it works. I know linux runs fine on low end computers, but I'm not sure
about x. I would really appreciate advice on this, and more general advice on
the best way to proceed in this situation if you're feeling typeative... =)
I think I'll need to setup a firewall and ip masq for these 8 computers. The
network guy here in my school district is extremely paranoid about security, so
that is an issue - I have to be able to sell this to him before he lets all
these computers on the network. Thanks for any help!
