Don't worry about asking questions, we all start somewhere.  At least
you've looked through the documentation out there first...

Anyway, modems can be really freakin' annoying but I think you're taking
the wrong approach splitting your time between kppp and minicom.  Just sit
down with minicom and go through all the menus (there aren't many) and
understand how it works, then get it going, then go from there...

There should be somewhere to put in modem initialization strings and
everything else you need to get it going.  It's basic but the best way to
figure out everything's right with your modem.
