Richard,
if you don't see any reference to a Zip drive after a dmesg then verify
that you have "Include IDE/ATAPI FLOPPY Support" compiled into the kernel,
it is located in the "Block Devices" section of `make menuconfig`.
As per the help kernel config help the IDE FLOPPY option provides support
for both ATAPI Zip support and the LS-120 "SuperDisk" drives.
