gcc cross compiler

Anyone know how to set up GCC as a cross compiler for the MIPS?
In particular, I need to set up GCC as a cross compiler that produces MIPS
code compatible with Nachos. 

I tried setting up GCC 2.95.2 to cross compile as the mips-irix6 (as
instructed by the gcc cross-compile FAQ), but the gcc build never
completes (I get a slew of errors).  Can anyone provide a hint?
