logitech mouse

I just got a three button logitech mouse and I am having trouble getting
it configured.  I tried using the Logitech protocal but it didn't work.  I
read up a little and found out that many new logitech mouses need the
"Microsoft" protocol, or the "Mouseman" protocol.  I tried both of these
and they got me closer than the logitech protocol, but still didn't work.
They worked in the command line, but when I open up x-windows the curser
moves frantically and randomly across the top of the screen.  I can't
control it at all.  Does any body else use the First Logitech mouse and
know how I might make it work?
